Variable Vane or VGT Turbo for Defender, Range Rover and Discovery 300 Tdi. Direct replacement for the original Garrett with no modifications required. You will need to supply good quality oil of the correct grade, oil filter and inlet / exhaust gasket (also available on request) Standard fixed geometry turbo design is always a compromise. Engines need a small turbo to accelerate quickly and improve throttle response (reduced turbo lag), but the small size of the compressor does not allow enough flow for anything beyond mid-range revs. So a bigger turbo is required for medium and high revs and higher flow, but this leads to more lag at the low end. The VGT variable geometry turbocharger acts like a small turbo initially and then alters the geometry to increase flow at higher revs, providing better power distribution throughout the rev range. Tdi VGT units use a special boost pressure operated actuator to control vane angle. Power improves throughout the rev range, but particularly at low and medium revs. Turbo lag is reduced and complements any other adjustments, such as an improved intercooler. To get the best out of the turbo, it is beneficial to adjust the fuel settings; however, improvements in drivability will be seen even with the standard trim, assuming a healthy engine.
