This is an oil-filled front shock absorber from the Girling brand.
It damps the movement of the front suspension springs to keep the tyres in contact with the road, and is usually replaced when it leaks oil or the ride becomes bouncy.
Compatible with Land Rover Series I, Series II and Series III (Santana).
