It performs distinct assembly duties depending on the vehicle: on the Land Rover Defender, it serves as the retention captive nut for securing the grab handle and interior trim panel on the rear tailgate, whereas on the Land Rover Freelander 1, it functions within the locking brackets and mounting points of the removable soft-top/hard-top opening mechanism.
